Our review article, titled “Magnetic Resonance Elastography of Brain Tumors,” examines the current clinical use of Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) in evaluation of brain tumors. Unlike conventional imaging methods, MRE is a technique that can non-invasively map the mechanical properties of tissues ,such as stiffness and viscosity. In this paper, we review how the viscoelastic properties of benign brain tumors, including meningioma, vestibular schwannoma, and pituitary adenoma, as well as malignant tumors such as glioblastoma, relate to underlying biological processes such as cellular density, extracellular matrix remodeling, and vascular changes.
The work was carried out in collaboration with the Department of Radiology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Energy Institute at Istanbul Technical University, and is co-authored by Dr. Yavuz O. Uca and Neslihan Koyuncu of BioQXs, together with Prof. Dr. Ingolf Sack.

Top: the review “Magnetic Resonance Elastography of Brain Tumors,” published in Zeitschrift für Medizinische Physik (Koyuncu, Uca & Sack). Bottom: the MRE workflow, (A) an MRI head coil with air-driven actuators delivers harmonic vibrations (20–60 Hz) to the head inside the MRI scanner; (B) the resulting MRI phase image and wave field are processed into a quantitative brain stiffness (shear wave speed, SWS) map.
We hope that this review, which brings together the potential of MRE in brain tumor diagnosis, surgical planning, and treatment monitoring, will serve as a comprehensive reference for researchers and clinicians in the field.
