Ulas Joins the Cognitive Computational Neuroscience Lab at Freie Universität Berlin

By BioQXs Team ·

We are excited to share that Ulas Dilek, responsible for Data Intelligence at BioQXs, has recently begun his voluntary research internship at the Cognitive Computational Neuroscience Lab at Freie Universität Berlin, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Adrien Doerig. The internship is supported through the Erasmus+ Traineeship Programme.

The lab sits at the frontier of two closely intertwined fields. Computational neuroscience uses mathematical models and computational tools to understand how the brain works, how it processes information, makes decisions, and perceives the world. NeuroAI takes this a step further by drawing inspiration from neuroscience to build better artificial intelligence systems, and in turn, using AI to test and refine our understanding of the brain. Together, these fields are opening new windows into one of science's most enduring questions: how intelligence arises from biological systems.

Ulas will be contributing to an ongoing research project focused on vision, hemispheric specialization, and interhemispheric information flow, in other words, how the left and right sides of the brain divide and coordinate the work of seeing and interpreting the visual world. The project combines artificial neural networks (ANNs) with functional MRI (fMRI) data, using computational models to probe patterns that would be difficult or invasive to study through biology alone.

At BioQXs, we always believe that some of the most interesting work happens at the edges. Ulas’ current work is a natural extension of that, where computer science meets neuroscience, where a model trained on images starts to align with the brain that evolved to process them.
